The short answer

Can Brazilians
get married in Italy?

Yes. A marriage celebrated according to Italian law is valid in Brazil and, under a general principle of international law, around the world. The Brazilian spouse needs a Nulla Osta (declaration for the purpose of marriage) from the Brazilian Consulate.

Which consulate: Rome for Tuscany and central and southern Italy; Milan for the north, Emilia-Romagna included.
In person: the Brazilian spouse books through e-Consular and goes to the Consulate.
Documents: a full-content (inteiro teor) birth certificate issued less than 6 months before, the Brazilian passport and a copy of the partner's ID. No apostille, no translation.
Valid for 6 months. We then legalise it at the Prefettura and take care of the Comune.
Our advice: unless you live in Italy, a civil wedding in Brazil and a symbolic ceremony here is often simpler.

How it works

step by step.

1. CertificatesRequest full-content certificates from the cartório: they must be less than 6 months old on the day of the Consulate.
2. Our checkSend us copies and we check everything before the appointment.
3. The ConsulateThe Brazilian spouse goes in person to the Consulate in Rome or Milan.
4. The PrefetturaWe legalise the Nulla Osta: you don't need to come.
5. The ComuneUsually 2 or 3 days before the wedding, in some towns the same day, with an interpreter.
6. After the weddingWe obtain the right certificates; the Brazilian spouse registers the marriage at the Consulate in person, then at the cartório in Brazil.

Brazilian offices can be slow to answer and not always consistent. Unless you live in Italy, we usually suggest a civil wedding in Brazil and a symbolic ceremony here, in Portuguese, Italian or both, led by Italian Wedding Celebrants.

Divorced outside Brazil? The divorce must be ratified by Brazil's Superior Court of Justice before a new marriage is accepted there: talk to us first.
